I work in BBC Public Service, what do I need to do?

If you work for BBC Public Service you are only required to complete your name, email address and reason for access.
You will receive 12 months access after which you will need to re-apply for access and re validate your account.

I work in BBC Studios, working on a BBC commission, what do I need to do?

If you work in BBC Studios or BBC Worldwide and are currently working on a commission for the BBC then you must tick the "I work for BBC Studios" tick box.
You must also provide a sponsor for access (this is usually the BBC Commissioning Executive responsible for your production).
You will receive access for 6 months after which you will to re-apply for access if still required.

I work for an Independent Production Company, working on a BBC commission, what do I need to do?

If you work for an Independent Production Company and are currently working on a commission for the BBC then you will need to enter your name, email address, your sponsor, your company name and your reason for access.
You will receive access for 6 months after which you will to re-apply for access if still required.

I work for BBC Studios, or an Indie on a commission for a non BBC channel?

Access to BBC Archive systems is specifically granted for the purpose of making content for BBC commissions. If you require BBC archive content for non BBC programmes you must go to Motion Gallery.

Why do I need a sponsor?

You need to name an accountable person from BBC Public Service who is responsible for the work that you have been commissioned to do.

How do I find out who my sponsor is?

Your sponsor is usually the Commissioning Executive for the production you are working on. If you do not know who this is please contact your Production Manager.

Why do I only get access for a specific period of time?

Access is limited as your role or commission may change and you may no longer need access to these archive systems. If you access expires and you still need access, please reapply.

My account has expired, how do I reactivate this?

You need to reapply for access through the Single Sign Up portal.

I have a technical issue, what do I do?

I need urgent access, can I fast track my application?

No, we rely on third parties to assist in providing you access and there is no way of speeding this process up. If you are BBC Studios or Indies then we also rely on approval from your sponsor.

I am BBC Public Service/BBC Studios and I have forgotten my password

If you have forgotten your password for Archive Search or Redux you can reset this here.

You log in to Digital Archive using your normal BBC network login ID and password, if you have forgotten these you will need to contact the IT helpdesk.

I am an Independent Production Company and I have forgotten my password

What is Archive Search?

Archive Search is a tool that allows you to search over 1000s of pieces of archive content from multiple archive systems in the BBC. At the moment you can search for content and browse. If you want to access the high res you can launch into the source system and clip from there.

Archive Search - What systems can I search over using Archive Search?

Initially you will be able to search over

  • Digital Archive
  • Fabric
  • Redux
  • BBC Scotland Digital Library

Archive Search - how can I source high resolution content?

At the moment you need to launch into the source systems, so for example the Digital Archive.

Archive Search - is the way I source high resolution going to change?

Yes, will be adding new functionality regularly. Next on our list is the ability to clip high resolution straight from Archive Search.

Archive Search - are the systems that I can search over going to change?

Yes. Before the end of the year you will be able to search over news archive as well.

Archive products - is the content all free and cleared for reuse?

No. As a programme maker it is your responsibility to ensure that all content is cleared for copyright, any payments are made and restrictions are cleared. Where available, we will make data about restrictions available in Archive Search but would strongly recommend you always check the paperwork.

Archive products - What high resolution content is available digitally?

  • Selected live television programmes from recent years.
  • Digitised legacy archive television programmes from the last forty years.
  • The entire BBC Wales television archive.
  • Around 19,000 digitised news film inserts from the 1950s and 60s.
  • Selected non-programme content including rushes and music sessions.
